This December 13, the European Metropolis of Lille (MEL) confirmed its support for the establishment of the Pôle IIID design school, Digital & Creative School, on the Châtellenie site, near the Plaine Images in Roubaix. The Metropolitan Council voted in favor of aid of two million euros. This new establishment will contribute to the attractiveness of the territory in terms of future training.
“The designation of MEL as the World Design Capital represented an opportunity to promote the region as a benchmark for innovation, creativity and sustainability. The deployment of a design school of national influence is therefore an essential asset to our attractiveness, “says Frédérique Seels, Vice-President in charge of Economy, Commerce and Handicrafts and Capital World of Design 2020 at the European Metropolis of Lille.
“The reception at Plaine Images of the new Pole IIID school, with its innovative concept, allows the MEL to position itself, once again, as a resolutely innovative metropolis”, affirms Guillaume Delbar, Vice-President in Innovation Manager at the European Metropolis of Lille.
Founded in 2003, Pole IIID, Digital & Creative School, Roubaix school of digital creation, integrated since 2017 at the Catholic University of Lille, today trains creators of video games and animated films.
The MEL confirmed its support for its future establishment by funding the development of the educational part of the Pole IIID project, at a total cost of nearly seven million euros. MEL will participate in this project for two million euros, on a par with the Hauts-de-France Region.
Designated World Design Capital in 2020, the MEL aims to be part of a lasting process of transformation of the territory through design. The development of a design school of national influence participates in this metamorphosis, reinforcing the attractiveness of the territory in terms of training offerings in future sectors.
A new design school on the territory of MEL
With new premises starting in September 2022, Pôle IIID, Digital & Creative School, is finally considering expanding its design training offer and increasing its enrollment from 250 to more than 600 students by 2025.
An innovative concept
This innovative project has the particularity of proposing a concept of school-residence which will invite the city within it, via its place Agora (open to all audiences) and the various services (catering, co-working, media-game library, amphi / cinéclub…). The educational and work spaces will be open 24 hours a day to students. The program includes areas for educational use (2,800 m2 with workshops and factories) and others dedicated to student accommodation (3,000 m2).
A strategic location
By bringing together its training offer on a single site, Pôle IIID is setting up in an innovative work environment, giving students the means to follow a course adapted to the professional world. This is the reason why it established itself at Plaine Images, a site of metropolitan excellence dedicated to the ecosystem of the image and the creative industries. By setting up in Roubaix, Pole IIID thus created, with the Higher School of Applied Arts and Textiles (E.S.A.A.T.), a pole of training in design and creative industries which will enhance the attractiveness of MEL. Preceded by the establishment of the ArtFX school, dedicated in particular to special effects, this new development consolidates the polarity of the northeast of the Metropolis, devoted to image, design (Plaine Images), e-commerce (Blanchemaille ) and innovative materials (Euramaterials on the Union website).
